Bring the number line down to where the learning is happening. The magnetic number line can be used for:
• whole class instruction during carpet/group time
• whole class teaching with students at their desks
• small group or individual instruction
• math activity centres or exploration time
• Learning Resource/Student Support classroom
The number line and number strips are easily visible from anywhere in the classroom. Some examples of their use include:
• demonstrating one-to-one correspondence
• basic addition (part-part-whole)
• chunking - helping students see jumps rather than counting by ones
• skip counting
• learning multiplication families
• demonstrating commutative relationships for addition and multiplication
• finding Lowest Common Multiples
• illustrating prime factorization for prime and composite numbers
• modelling even numbers as symmetrical and primes as asymmetrical
• introducing division physically without mentioning the word "division" (both with and without remainders)
• solving basic unknown problems (algebra)
• Use "negative strips" and the magnetic "Integer Basket" to model and explain all negative integer operations & zero pairs
